Mankweng:The University of Limpopo (UL) is entering an exciting new phase as it announces the appointment of Dr. Jeffrey Mabelebele as the new Vice-Chancellor and Principal, effective January 1, 2026. This appointment marks a significant transitional period for the university, as Dr. Mabelebele takes over from the esteemed Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, who has been a cornerstone of the institution for 54 years, including a notable 22-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor.
Mr. Pandelajni Nefolovhodwe, Chairperson of the University Council, made the announcement of Dr. Mabelebele’s appointment and took the opportunity to commend Professor Mokgalong for his remarkable service. “From the university’s inception, Professor Mokgalong has been integral in molding its direction and achievements. His impactful contributions will be felt for generations to come,” Nefolovhodwe stated, highlighting the legacy Mokgalong leaves behind.
Professor Mokgalong’s tenure has been characterized by significant milestones, including the conferral of over 600 doctoral and 5,281 master’s degrees and the establishment of South Africa’s first medical school in the democratic era. These accomplishments are not merely statistics; they represent a commitment to improving educational accessibility and quality within the region, aligning perfectly with the university’s mission to serve historically underserved communities.
In transitioning to his new role, Dr. Mabelebele was selected after a comprehensive review process that underscored his qualifications and garnered strong support from both the University Senate and the Institutional Forum. With extensive experience, including his role as Chief Executive Officer of Higher Education South Africa (HESA) and various leadership positions at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, Dr. Mabelebele is well-equipped to lead UL into the future.
The University Council emphasized that Dr. Mabelebele would focus on modernizing higher education while advancing the university’s objectives of teaching, research, and community engagement. His plans also include enhancing financial sustainability and promoting social justice, ensuring that UL remains adaptable to an evolving educational landscape.
“Dr. Mabelebele brings a wealth of knowledge and a passionate commitment to higher education that will fuel continued growth and innovation at the University of Limpopo,” remarked Nefolovhodwe. “His strategic vision aligns seamlessly with our foundational values of sustainability and social equity.”
As the UL community prepares to embrace this new leadership, there is widespread gratitude for Professor Mokgalong’s legacy. Former student Kwena Makgaga shared heartfelt appreciation, saying, “Thank you, Professor Mokgalong, for dedicating yourself to uplifting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Your unwavering support has allowed so many of us to pursue our academic aspirations. We look forward to the journey ahead under Dr. Mabelebele’s leadership.”
Professor Mahlo Mokgalong stands out as a strategic and results-driven executive. His illustrious career path began as a research assistant, progressing through various academic ranks to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor in 2003, making him South Africa’s longest-serving vice-chancellor.
Under Mokgalong’s guidance, UL transformed from a historically disadvantaged institution into a flourishing, research-intensive university, addressing African challenges while maintaining global competitiveness. His tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including the merger of the University of the North with the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA), which resulted in expanded governance structures and an increased student population.
Recognizing the growing enrollment, Mokgalong proactively addressed infrastructure needs, overseeing the development of state-of-the-art facilities such as modern laboratories, postgraduate residences, and health centers. Furthermore, he has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and mentored numerous students, solidifying his status as a leader in the academic community.
As UL welcomes Dr. Jeffrey Mabelebele, there is a sense of anticipation among the student body and faculty alike, as they prepare to support a vision that promises to further advance academic excellence and innovation. The University of Limpopo stands ready to build upon the solid foundation laid by Professor Mokgalong, heralding a future filled with opportunities and growth.
