TIMELESS TRIBUTE TO MATOME   MAUPI

Polokwane : Our region, our country indeed the entire world of Journalism is mourning the untimely passing of one of the best current affairs show host Matome Arnold Maupi. Maupi who was born and bred in Mohodi , died last week Thursday after a short illness according to reports from various sources. A 52 year old Maupi worked for one of SABC’s Public Broadcasting Service ( PBS) stations Thobela FM as the host of a current affairs show called Hlokwa LA Tsela. Maupi joined the station in early 2000s, coming  from  the background  of community  radio and he made the name for himself by translating some of his English interviews into sepedi effortlessly that skill earned him the nickname of “ Hlogo Ya Ditaba”. Timeless News went to streets to get the reactions of some of the ardent followers of the fallen journalist, we spoke to a barbershop owner Given Lekwankwa who described Maupi as someone who made current affairs interesting , “ Matome Maupi has contributed a lot to my love for current affairs shows because of his good command of sepedi and how he simplify his interviews, I don’t know him personally but his death has left an indelible mark in my heart radio won’t be the same without him, I am gonna miss him” said Lekwankwa. Thipa Selela former  colleague  at SABC attributed his  journalistic flair and communications skills  to the mentorship he got from Maupi, “When I joined the SABC in 2007 he was tasked with training me and he did an exceptional job. He was a diligent man; his cheerful personality will be missed. He was energetic and worked like a man possessed with extraordinary vision. He had exceptional courage and unmatched passion for radio. May God rest his soul.” said Selala in an interview with TimesLive. Joosey Buthane businessman and former Economic Freedom Fighters Chairperson in Limpopo described Maupi as hardworking journalist “ Matome Maupi was hardworking journalist and he has helped us to expose corruption in Limpopo and in his honour i implore his fellow journalists to continue hoisting the flag of ethical and investigative journalism high.” Quipped Buthane. Sello Sam Motshitshila Former Executive Producer of Hlokwa LA Tsela remembered Maupi as a tough journalist, “ Maupi was a hard-hitting journalist however he did everything with consideration and respect, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to his family and friends ” concluded Motshitshila. Maupi survived by his wife and three kids and he will be laid to rest on Saturday in Senwabarwana.
