- The 17th Limpopo Marula Festival Promises To Be A Thriller
By Staff Reporter
Phalaborwa: Limpopo Province is poised to receive high volumes of revellers during the 17th edition of Limpopo Marula Festival that began yesterday , at Impala Park Stadium, Phalaborwa. This is despite rumours that some pressure groups around Phalaborwa are calling for people to go to the festival without access tickets. It is also alleged that another festival has been organised to counter Limpopo Marula Festival, which promises to be a thriller regardless.
The eight-day event commencing from the 15th until the 23rd of April at Phalaborwa was officially opened by the Mayor of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Cllr. Merriam Malatji, who encouraged the people to buy tickets in their numbers at Computicket to be part of this flagship event. The Office of the MEC for Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Mr. Rodgers Monama, has announced that revellers should brace themselves for a thriller and a much-improved 2023 Limpopo Marula Festival. Monama made pronouncements on major activities of the festival during the media launch held in Polokwane on 16 March 2023.
On the 15th until the morning of the 23rd April 2023, the festival will open with open-air Youth Movement featuring among others artists like, King Monada, Master KG, Musa Keys, Lady Shiks, Sido & Manana, Ma Joy, Ntombi Ya Mutsonga, and many more, while the weekend of the 22nd April 2023 will feature Dr. Winnie Mashaba, Dr. Tumi, Makhadzi with Penny Penny, Mahlatse Vocal, Thapelo Molomo, Malondolo, Henny C, Rapson Rambuwani, and many more. Tickets for the public will be sold at R200 and for Comedy night will cost R100. People are encouraged to avoid late rush by purchasing their tickets on time for both weekends.
The festival was preceded by the street carnival on the 14th April 2023 comprising various cultural groups, South African National Defence Force from the town of Phalaborwa and motor bikers to Impala Park stadium, where the festival will take place.
Like the previous festivals, the 14 cooperatives under Mukumbi Industries will brew 6 000 litres of Marula beverage, which will be consumed by the public during the festival.
The festival will not be a complete business without the heritage or traditional aspect of the tasting of the first fruit, which was conducted by the Department of Sport, Arts (DSAC) and Culture in Limpopo on the 3rd and 4th April 2023 at Muti wa Vatsonga, which was presided over by its MEC, Ms. Nakedi Sibanda-Kekana.
