Gauteng — Two teenagers, aged 18 and 15, have appeared in the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court in connection with a brutal attack that left one victim dead and another allegedly thrown into a mine shaft.
The pair face charges of murder and kidnapping following the deaths of a 21-year-old and a 16-year-old. The identity of the younger accused cannot be disclosed due to legal protections for minors.
The charges stem from a violent incident on February 24 at the Dumping Site informal settlement in Randfontein, where tensions are believed to have escalated into a deadly confrontation.
According to details before the court, both accused allegedly assaulted the victims using sticks during the attack. The 21-year-old died at the scene.
The second victim, a 16-year-old, was allegedly thrown into a mine shaft after attempting to flee.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the State intends to pursue the matter rigorously.
“The NPA remains committed to ensuring justice is served and that those responsible for violent crimes are held accountable before the courts,” he said.
He added: “The matter was postponed to April 13 to allow the accused to obtain legal representation and for a date to be set for a bail application.”
The accused were taken into custody after their parents handed them over to police on March 20.
The case will return to court for bail proceedings as investigations continue, with authorities highlighting the gravity of violent crime in the area.
