Exarro owned Belfast coal plant has made an investment in the education and development of the little ones by donating toys amounting to R1.4 million . The toys were on Friday delivered to two early childhood development (ECD) centres , at Dullstroom in Emakhazeni Local Municipality. Sifiso Khumalo of Exarro Belfast coal told Timeless that the wonderful gesture was in honour of the leagacy of the late world renowned stateman, Nelson Mandela who would have turned 103 years on 18 July. “As part of the Mandela Month Celebration, Exxaro Belfast Coal donated a remainder of the toys to two ECD centres namely, Dullstroom Learning Centre and Siyasiza Creche at Dullstroom town,” Khumalo said.
“This drive, started in November 2020 donating to over 10 centres across the Emakhazeni Local Municipality.”
He said toys play a very important role in the development of a child as they are proven to build self-self esteem as well as improve motor skills. Research psychologist, Kathleen Kremer once said, “children learn by playing and toys are the instruments”.
Khumalo also stated that the team also visited Mpumalanga and Limpopo branches of Epilepsy South Africa and donated beds and bedding and bedroom items worth over R80 000.
“The centre takes care on daily basis 77 adults aged between 18 to 60 with epilepsy condition, neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance,” he said. The Minerals and Petrleuom Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) gives rise to the Mining Charter which ensures that mining affected communities bennefit from mining activity taking place on and around where they live. “Exarro always strives to provide the necessary support in the process of tackling social ills and ensuring sustainability within the communities in which Exxaro operates,” he said.
Simphiwe Skhosana, Managing the center and a registered counsellor for the Dullstroom Learning Centre said thank you for the contributing towards the education of our learners in Sakhelwe. ” We feel really blessed by your generosity. May Exxaro continue to prosper and give hope to those in need,” she said in appreciation of the donation,” said Skhosana.
