Kwaggafontein: A 29-year-old suspect, Jack Musa Mthimunye, who allegedly killed a 27-year-old man by running him over with his vehicle, was remanded in custody by the Mkobolo Magistrate’s Court in Kwaggafontein on Wednesday 3 March 2021.

According to Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, Mpumalanga Provincial Police Spokesperson, the murder incident happened on Sunday 28 February when a group of about six people, traveling in a vehicle at Mathyzensloop Village outside Kwaggafontein accosted the victim who ended up ran over with a vehicle.

“Along the way, the driver stopped his vehicle and a scuffle broke between and the 27-year-old man, which culminated into a physical fight. The victim is reported to have fallen on the ground, after which the driver, who is now a suspect on this matter, is said to have went back into his car and drove over the victim then drove off, leaving the badly injured victim helpless,” said Hlathi.
He said the police and the medical personnel were notified about the incident and upon arrival, the victim was unfortunately certified dead.

Hlathi said the suspect was later arrested after he handed himself over to the Kwaggafontein Police Station, hence his court appearance.
According to unconfirmed reports from residents, the victim was tied with a rope and dragged for a few kilometres which apparently led to his death.
“The suspect was very drunk during the incident, which fueled his anger and ending up tying the helplessly man at the back of his vehicle, dragging his lifeless body along the streets. It is said they were fighting for a woman,” said one of Mathyzensloop residents.
Hlathi said the case was postponed to 11 March 2021, at the same court where he is expected to make a formal bail application.
