Johannesburg – Police swooped on two men believed to be the bodyguards of murder-accused Katisu “KT” Molefe outside the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, arresting them after they were allegedly found carrying unlicensed firearms.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspects, aged 24 and 36, were taken into custody shortly after Molefe made his court appearance. Officers recovered two semi-automatic AK-47 rifles and ammunition, none of which were licensed.

“The bodyguards are believed to have been escorting an accused person who was appearing today in court,” said Mathe.

Police also impounded the vehicle the men were travelling in after discovering that the licence disc did not match the number plates.

Molefe, whose case details were not outlined in the police statement, is currently facing murder charges. The arrests have intensified concerns over illegal firearms and the rise of heavily armed escorts in high-crime areas such as Alexandra.

The two suspects are expected to face charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Further details regarding their court appearance and legal representation have not yet been released.
