Hazyview : Three women were killed in a horror crash as bakkie overturns on R40 Road near Hazyview on Friday 2 April. Seventeen people were allegedly on board of the bakkie when the accident occurred. According to Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison Spokesperson (DCSSL), Moteti Mmusi, The crash occurred when a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) overturned on R40 Road between Hazyview and Marite around 08h00.
Mmusi said fourteen more people, who were also in the bakkie, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Matikeane and Tintswalo Hospitals respectively,” he said. “Two victims were declared dead at the scene while the third person died at the hospital,” he said. Mmusi said the cause of the crash is still being investigated, however, earlier indications show that the driver may have lost control before the vehicle overturned. “It is also believed that the people were part of the funeral procession from one of the farming areas when the crash happened,” he said. Mmusi said the department is busy with the process of identifying the deceased. Mpumalanga MEC for DCSSL, Vusi Shongwe, called on motorists to obey the rules and drive cautiously. “With increased caution, driving tragedies such as this are avoidable,” he said. Shongwe sent condolences to the bereaved families and wishing those who were injured a speedy recovery.
