Johannesburg — A high-speed police chase through Sandton ended in a dramatic arrest on Thursday afternoon after an attempted armed robbery targeting a hotel guest.

The incident, which unfolded within the Bramley policing precinct, began shortly after 2pm when Highway Patrol officers received intelligence about a white Toyota Corolla allegedly used in the failed robbery.

“Highway Patrol received information about a vehicle, a white Toyota Corolla, allegedly involved in an attempted armed robbery of a guest near a hotel in Sandton,” said South African Police Service spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili.

A coordinated response involving police, Johannesburg Metro Police and private security led to the vehicle being spotted on Katherine Street with three occupants inside.

When officers attempted to intercept the car, the driver accelerated, triggering a high-speed pursuit through the busy Sandton corridor.

“The police attempted to stop the vehicle but it sped off and a chase ensued,” Muridili said.

As pressure mounted, two suspects jumped from the moving vehicle and fled on foot, disappearing into the surrounding area. Police continued the pursuit of the remaining suspect until the vehicle crashed into a truck, abruptly ending the chase.

“The driver of the vehicle got out and tried to run but the police gave chase and caught him a few meters from the scene,” Muridili confirmed.

A search of the vehicle uncovered two unlicensed firearms, ammunition and gloves. Investigators also established that the vehicle had been cloned and was originally hijacked in Daveyton in February this year.

“The team also discovered that the vehicle has been cloned and it was hijacked in Daveyton in February 2026,” Muridili said.

The arrested suspect is expected to face a string of charges, including possession of a hijacked vehicle, illegal firearms and ammunition, as well as reckless and negligent driving.

A manhunt is now underway for the two suspects who escaped. Police investigations continue.
