Mbombela:Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe will this week lead the Easter Road Safety campaign launch with a law enforcement operation that will take place in Mbombela.

The plans for this year’s Easter long weekend are informed by the comprehensive historical information on crashes and fatalities during the Easter holidays between 2018 and 2022.

This information enabled the department with all role players to review activities in order to respond appropriately with a view of reducing deadly crashes or dealing with reckless and negligent driver behavior.

A 24-hour shift by traffic law enforcement officers will be implemented on six identified provincial priority routes from 06 to 11 April 2023. These routes have previously contributed most crashes over the last five years during the Easter period.

As part of strengthening coordination, a 24-hour central information and communication centre will be established from 06 to 11 April 2023. The centre will, among others, monitor crashes and incidents as well as deployment of officials in all the routes across the province.

Other operations that will be put in place include alcohol operations, roadblocks, block patrols, and other road safety activations across the province.

A close eye will also be placed on ports of entries, especially Lebombo and Oshoek bordergates.

Meanwhile, MEC Vusi Shongwe has urged motorists to use the road with greater caution during these holidays.”While plans are in place to curb road crashes, we are appealing to all road users to play their part by being cautious and considerate when driving. We must prioritize our safety and that of other road users,” says Shongwe.
