Jane Furse: The Limpopo Department of Health has confirmed that the conjoined twins, who were successfully delivered and extracted at Jane Furse Hospital, passed away in the early on Thursday morning.
The provincial department said the babies were delivered through a caesarean section and later transferred to Mankweng Hospital Neonatal ICU, for full and further assessment by both neonatologists and pediatric surgeons where unfortunately they passed away.
Neil Shikwambana, Limpopo Department of Health Spokesperson, said doctors tried to analyse extraction to ensure successful operation.
“Since their admission to Mankweng Neonatal ICU, specialists from various clinical disciplines from both Mankweng-Pietersburg Complex and Dr George Mukhari Central Hospital, have been hard at work in pursuit of the best possible intervention for the case. The initial set of studies revealed multiple complexities which required appropriate and thorough planning of further Management.”
The twins were born to a 41-year-old mother last week Thursday at Jane Furse Hospital and were joined at the chest and abdomen.
The mother, who the department could not reveal her identity at the stage, was a patient who was a referral from a clinic and only diagnosed as a normal twin pregnancy during Antenatal Clinic visits.
It was only during operation that doctors discovered the babies were joined on the chest and abdomen.
The MEC for Health in Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, expressed that they were hopeful that the twins could return home.
“We were hopeful that the scheduled joint academic meeting between specialists from Mankweng Tertiary Academic and George Mukhari Central Academic Hospital would bring the desired results for the future of the twins. Unfortunately the twins could not make it.”
Ramathuba has sent her deep seated sympathy’s and condolences to the bereaved family and the community at large during this difficult period.
The department said a team of Psychologists are dispatched to offer psychological support to the mother of the twins and her family during these hard times.
