BY ERIC MATOME KGOMO
DRIEKOPIES: Education Department MEC in Mpumalanga, Bonakele Majuba, have recently visited Shongwe Boarding School in Driekopies, as part of his school support visit programme.
Majuba paid a visit to the school in the Nkomazi Local Municipality, to encourage learners ahead of the winter examination.
The Shongwe Boarding School was established in 2012 and currently has an enrolment of 812 learners, on which most of them are from eight neighbouring farms. The boarding school caters for grade R to 12.
Shongwe Boarding School, is one of the government institutions, which were conceptualized to guarantee the provision of quality education and to reduce the drop-out rate for learners from farming areas.
The boarding school is one of the best performers in grade 12, whereby, for the past four years it has been recording above 90% in matric pass rate. Back in 2020, the school obtained 93.6% pass rate, which exceeded the benchmark set by the Education Department in Mpumalanga for the first time.
MEC Majuba said he was encouraged by the overall performance of the school, besides some day to day challenges they experience from time to time.
“I am pleased with the way the boarding school is being managed. The learner performance of the school is a true reflection of the leadership qualities of this institution,” he said.
Majuba added that the department will look into the infrastructural challenges presented by the school management, in order to improve and assist with the efficient and effective administration and management of the whole institution. “To this end, I will in due course deliver a detailed report in this regard,” Majuba said.
