South Africa – In light of the current inclement weather conditions, the public is urged to continue heeding warnings issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) to prevent possible injuries or loss of life. This is according to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosi Hlabisa.
The National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has been coordinating disaster response measures since SAWS began issuing severe weather alerts on Thursday.
Level 2 warnings for disruptive rainfall, which may lead to localised flooding in Limpopo and Mpumalanga, were issued from Monday to Tuesday, with possible snowfall expected in the Drakensberg from Tuesday afternoon.
SAWS also cautioned that extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over central parts of the Northern Cape and the western regions of the Western Cape.
In addition to possible snowfall, provinces may experience fog patches, isolated thundershowers, and cool to warm temperatures in certain areas.
As weather conditions can change rapidly, CoGTA has urged the public to monitor local news and SAWS updates for the latest forecasts and to prepare to evacuate if necessary.
People are advised to avoid crossing low-lying bridges or flooded roads, and to secure their homes by reinforcing doors and windows. They should also remain in contact with loved ones, particularly vulnerable individuals, CoGTA advised.
“Ours is to endeavour to save lives and build community resilience. Lives cannot be replaced. Every precaution we take, every plan we implement, and every act of preparedness must be guided by the principle of safeguarding human lives above all else,” Hlabisa said.
