Kghodwana: On Friday South Africans joined Mpumalanga Department of Culture Sport and Recreation in celebrating a momentous milestone the 90th birthday of Dr. Esther Mahlangu, a globally recognized Ndebele artist. MEC Leah Mabuza, hosted a grand celebration at Kgodwana Cultural Village, attended by dignitaries, friends, and family. This occasion not only honoured her birthday but also served as an exhibition of traditional Ndebele garments and jewellery, showcasing the rich cultural heritage that Dr. Mahlangu embodies.
Among the notable attendees were Khoshi LM Mokoena, President of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA), as well as Dr. Nothembi Mkhwebane and Professor Langa. Each shared heartfelt sentiments that underscored the importance of Dr. Mahlangu’s contributions to Ndebele culture and the arts.
Tshepo Mabena from Kwaggafontein praised Dr. Mahlangu for hoisting the flag of Ndebele culture high. Mabena expressed gratitude for witnessing the artistry of Dr. Mahlangu, stating, “I am grateful that our generation has bore witness to a griot of culture and now our own Ndebele culture is recognized all over the world because of Dr. Mahlangu’s artistic prowess.”
Xolisile Nyandeni, a teacher from Elukhanyisweni Secondary School, echoed these sentiments regarding Dr. Mahlangu’s impact on youth. “I am very ecstatic as a teacher because some of our learners enjoyed the skills transfer from Dr. Esther Mahlangu. I firmly believe that the talent of Gogo will be immortalized through these kids,” she remarked.
Kgoshi Mokoena lauded the Mpumalanga Provincial Government and local businesses for their recognition of Dr. Mahlangu while highlighting a common pitfall in society. “I am excited about what our government is doing for Dr. Mahlangu because it’s a common thing for our politicians to treat our legends as favorites after death and make flowery speeches at their funerals. I hope other government officials will learn from this,” he stated.
MEC Leah Mabuza expressed admiration for institutions like the University of Mpumalanga and Wits University for commissioning research on Dr. Mahlangu’s life and work. “I am glad that universities such as Wits and the University of Mpumalanga have commissioned studies to preserve her legacy for posterity. Today, we are not only here to celebrate her birthday, but we also aim to foster skills development at Kgodwana Cultural Village to ensure the continuity of our culture,” she said.
