Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga — Dennis Makhubela, known as King Xikaveni, an award-winning R&B and disco singer, he recently released a new EP called “Kuwa Rale Thyakeni,” which is gaining popularity.
King Xikaveni’s music journey began in his church choir.

“I started singing from church at an early age, even during Sunday school,” he says. “I was born with this gift.” His soulful voice caught people’s attention early on, helping him move from his hometown of Mpumalanga to bigger stages.

At first, he wanted to do traditional Xitsonga music, inspired by local artist Thomas Chauke. “I didn’t want to sing or do disco. I wanted to do Xigaza,” he explains. But he realized his community loved disco. “To connect with them, I had to stick to what they loved,” he says. This helped him build his initial fans.

Before focusing fully on music, King Xikaveni studied Electrical Engineering at Mopani TVET College. Despite challenges, he kept pushing. His big break came in 2021 with his debut album, “Volume ya Rirhandzu,” which brought him more recognition.

He began releasing disco songs in 2019, which resonated with his community. “It was difficult at first, but I kept going,” he recalls. His hard work paid off when he won the Best R&B Singer award at the 2024 Radio Bushbuckridge Music Awards, a major achievement for him.

King Xikaveni has also worked with legendary musicians like Sunglen Chabalala, Cool B, and Mozambique’s Makhwirhi Baloyi. “It’s a great honor,” he says. “It shows my hard work is paying off and that I’m making my community proud.”

Outside music, he is a successful businessman, owning “King Xikaveni Construction,” an electrical company. His dedication led to the success of his 2021 album and singles like “Phosta Nkatanga” and “Wrong Number.” He has also collaborated internationally, including with Mozambican artists on the hit “Ava Hlahluveli.”

Despite setbacks, such as changing his producer in early 2025, he remained resilient. His latest EP, “Kuwa Rale Thyakeni,” features collaborations with Stanley Chiloane, Kenny Khosa, and Cool B.
Reflecting on his journey, King Xikaveni emphasizes perseverance.

“Music is my life. No matter the hurdles, I keep pushing. I want to inspire young artists from my community to chase their dreams,” he says.
