Northern Cape – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Pixley Ka Seme District has applauded community members for their vigilance and cooperation in the fight against stock theft.

Acting on information provided by the public, police successfully arrested five suspects in Philipstown last week for being in possession of suspected stolen meat.

The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to curb stock theft, which has become a persistent challenge in rural areas.

According to SAPS, the community played a critical role by sharing valuable intelligence on alleged stock theft activities in the district.

This collaboration enabled swift police action, ultimately leading to the recovery of meat believed to have been stolen.

Images released by SAPS show butchered meat and carcass parts allegedly linked to the crime. The suspects are expected to face charges relating to the possession of suspected stolen property.

The police have urged communities to remain vigilant and to continue reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that stock theft poses a serious threat to rural livelihoods. Farmers are encouraged to implement preventative measures, such as keeping livestock registers, branding animals in accordance with the Animal Identification Act, and reporting all incidents of stock theft without delay.

“This cooperation between the community and the police demonstrates the importance of working together to combat crime. Rural safety remains a priority, and community policing partnerships are vital in ensuring accountability and protection of livelihoods,” SAPS said in a statement.

The arrested suspects are set to appear in court soon.
