The University of Fort Hare’s Faculty of Science and Agriculture has expressed outrage following the brutal killing of one of its own, Mr. Anganathi Gwengu, a Master’s student in the Department of Animal and Pasture Science.

According to the faculty, Gwengu was visiting friends in Dimbaza when he was attacked and robbed of his belongings, including his phone and clothing. Seeking safety, he fled to a nearby house for refuge. However, residents allegedly mistook him for a thief, calling in a mob that fatally assaulted him.

The Faculty Council described the incident as both “heinous” and “brainless,” condemning the mob for resorting to violence without verifying the circumstances.

“We are deeply disappointed that people whom we view as parents chose to take this heinous act without even checking why the person was in the yard half-naked. We condemn this brainless act by all means possible,” the statement read.

The killing has sent shockwaves across the university community, with students and staff mourning the loss of a promising scholar whose life was cut short by senseless violence.

In a firm call to action, the Faculty Council urged all students in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture to unite in demanding justice.

“The Faculty Council stands in support of the Gwengu family and the friends, classmates, and lecturers of Mr. Anganathi and pledges to make all necessary means to ensure they are not alone.”

The Council further announced its intention to escalate the matter, pledging to write to both the Station Commander of Dimbaza and the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner of Police, demanding accountability and swift action.
