Mount Frere – In a bold push into previously uncharted territory, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has made significant inroads in Ward 14, Umzimvubu, recruiting 136 new members in the rural village of Makolonini – a place where the party admits it had never had a footprint before.
The membership drive, held over the Women’s Day weekend, was described by DA leaders as “breaking new ground” both politically and socially.
“We have just welcomed over 100 new DA members this Women’s Day in Ward 14, Umzimvubu, kwi lali yase Makolonini, where the Democratic Alliance Eastern Cape never existed before,” the party said.
Baxolile Nodada, DA MP said the sign-up drive was not only historic but a clear signal of shifting political tides.
“It was 136 members with more being signed up. These are new members – we never existed in those areas. The growth of the DA has been quite significant in the rural Eastern Cape because people are fed up with lies, corruption, poverty, unemployment and lack of service delivery. They have found new hope in the DA, especially because of our delivery in neighbouring wards where people have given the DA a chance, as well as our work in local, provincial and national government,” Nodada said.
Beyond the celebration, the DA has already committed to tackling pressing local issues. First on the agenda: water and sanitation.
“We have already taken up their issue of water and sanitation because we are in the business of changing people’s lives for the better,” the party added.
With the blue wave now sweeping into new communities, the DA says this momentum is proof that residents are ready for practical change and accountable governance.
