Johannesburg — A high-speed shootout in Ormonde, Johannesburg, has left two people dead and two others seriously wounded after gunmen opened fire during a pursuit involving three vehicles in broad daylight.
The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon along Crownwood Road, where multiple suspects, travelling in separate vehicles, exchanged gunfire in what authorities believe was a targeted attack.
According to South African Police Service spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the vehicles were engaged in a high-speed chase when shots were fired between occupants.
“Two people have been declared dead and two taken to hospital with injuries,” said Nevhuhulwi.
Emergency responders arrived to a chaotic scene, with victims found inside the vehicles following the exchange of gunfire. The wounded were rushed to nearby medical facilities, where they remain in critical condition.
Police have yet to confirm the identities of the victims or those involved in the shooting.
No arrests have been made at this stage, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Investigators are treating the incident as a targeted act, though the circumstances leading up to the chase are still under scrutiny.
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation and are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or captured footage to assist in tracking down those responsible.
“Investigations are under way,” Colonel Nevhuhulwi said.
