Limpopo — Authorities have launched an investigation following a fatal crash on the N1 near Modimolle on Wednesday morning, with multiple deaths reported.

The collision occurred between the Mookgopong Y-press and a known high-accident zone, prompting the closure of the northbound lane as emergency services responded to the scene.

While official figures are yet to be confirmed, early reports indicate that at least five people may have died in the two-vehicle crash.

The incident comes just hours after Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, issued a warning to motorists ahead of the busy Easter travel period.

Speaking at a road safety campaign launch, Mathye said traffic volumes are expected to rise sharply, with increased law enforcement visibility planned across major routes and towns.

She urged motorists to remain patient, particularly at tollgates, as the province prepares for heavy traffic linked to the annual pilgrimage of the two largest Zion Christian Church (ZCC) gatherings.

“We expect significant movement of buses and minibuses on R71 from Polokwane towards Boyne and from Tzaneen direction, as well as on D4040 from R37 turn off to ZCC St. Engenas via Maja. We also expect movement of buses on N1 from Beitbridge to Polokwane Direction and from N11 via R567 or D19 Matlala Road to Polokwane,” MEC Mathye stated.

Mathye emphasised that road safety remains a shared responsibility and called on motorists to cooperate with authorities to reduce accidents during the peak travel period.
