Durban – Durban metro police dismantled a drug operation in Chatsworth on Wednesday, arresting an alleged dealer at his Westcliff home as community concerns over rising crime escalate.

Colonel Boysie Zungu, spokesperson for Durban Metro Police, said the suspect was found with crack cocaine, mandrax tablets, crystal meth, heroin capsules, and prescription medication Xanax.

“Police acted on information regarding a suspected drug den. Members responded swiftly following community concerns about escalating crime. The coordinated operation led to the apprehension of an individual in possession of a significant quantity of illicit substances,” Zungu said.

Additional items seized included drug paraphernalia and cash believed to be proceeds of crime, with an estimated street value of R26,850.

“This arrest highlights the importance of intelligence-led operations and community cooperation in fighting drug-related crime. The Durban Metro Police Service remains committed to ensuring safer communities and urges the public to continue reporting criminal activities,” Zungu added.

Earlier this month, Natalie Perumal, a mother of two from Umhlatuzana, appeared in court alongside her husband, Gerald Perumal, 33, in connection with alleged drug dealing. Gerald was arrested by the Hawks at his home during a sting operation while allegedly trying to flush drugs down the toilet.

Authorities recovered cocaine, mandrax, chemicals, packaging materials, manufacturing equipment, cash, cellphones, firearms, and ammunition valued at R1 million.

Community leader and ward councillor Tony Govender said residents have raised repeated concerns about drug activity in Woodhurst, Westcliff, and Silverglen.

“We are glad to see the police stepping up, conducting sting operations, and bringing these dealers to book. As community leaders, we want to see our society grow in a peaceful environment.  We want to see our youngsters take their rightful place in society as decent citizens, not get hooked on or deal drugs that are flooding our community.” Govender said.

The latest accused is expected to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court later this week.
