Cape Town – A major milestone has been reached along Cape Town’s False Bay coastline as Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis officially broke ground on the long-awaited R300 million redevelopment of the iconic Strandfontein Pavilion.

Joined by Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, the launch signals the beginning of a transformative, multi-year project aimed at restoring and reimagining one of the city’s most treasured recreational spaces — built around the largest tidal pool in the Southern Hemisphere.

“It’s a joy to break ground today on this flagship project. We promised we would rebuild the Strandfontein Pavilion, and now this is being fulfilled. It is an emotional day seeing this come to fruition,” said Hill-Lewis.

Reflecting on the deep community connection to the site, the Mayor added that the project was inspired by engagements with Mitchells Plain residents who shared memories of growing up at the pavilion.

“This project was among my first priorities on taking office, inspired by visiting Mitchells Plain residents who reminisced about their childhood spent enjoying the Strandfontein Pavilion. Today, after much planning and design, we have begun the work and soon will see this wonderful place restored, rebuilt, and improved so that many more Capetonians can enjoy it into the future.”

Momentum on the development has already exceeded expectations, with the City accelerating construction timelines.

“Not only is the project steaming ahead, we are in fact ahead of schedule, which is why we recently brought funds forward in the Adjustment Budget to start the construction we are launching today,” said Mayor Jill-Lewis.

Originally constructed in the 1980s, the Strandfontein Pavilion is set to undergo a full-scale upgrade that will transform it into a vibrant, year-round destination. Plans include a complete refurbishment of the precinct, the introduction of new commercial and restaurant spaces, and enhanced public amenities.

Key additions to the development include a new NSRI base with a boat launch ramp, indoor event and concert facilities for weddings and conferences, as well as an open-air amphitheatre designed to host outdoor performances and community events.

Accessibility improvements are also central to the redevelopment, with better access to the beach for people with disabilities, alongside strengthened safety and security measures throughout the precinct.

The vision is to evolve the pavilion into a dynamic, multi-use hub that not only preserves its legacy but expands its role within the community.

“The Strandfontein Pavilion upgrade is not just a refurbishment — it is a catalytic investment in a key coastal node, one that honours the memories of the past while creating the foundation for many more to come,” said Councillor Higham.

“By aligning this project with broader infrastructure upgrades across Mitchells Plain, we are enhancing public facilities, improving safety, and creating a more vibrant, inclusive and multi-use space for residents and visitors alike.”

The redevelopment framework has been shaped by extensive public participation, including a cultural mapping process that captured the stories and memories of the local community — ensuring that the renewed space reflects both its heritage and its future promise.
