Mbombela – The Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation has extended its heartfelt congratulations to two of the province’s football clubs, TS Galaxy and Casric Stars, following their remarkable achievements in the Nedbank Cup. Both teams secured their places in the quarterfinals of South Africa’s premier knockout competition after delivering standout performances in the Last 16 stage.
In a statement issued earlier this week, MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ms. Mabuza, praised the teams for their resilience, tactical discipline, and unwavering fighting spirit. “Both teams have demonstrated the qualities that define Mpumalanga football,” she said. “Their progression to the last eight is not only a victory for their clubs but a proud moment for the entire province and our passionate supporters.”
TS Galaxy made headlines in late February when they stunned reigning Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns with a commanding 2–0 victory at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium. First-half goals from Siphamandla Ngwenya and Junior Zindoga sealed a memorable win for coach Adnan Beganovic’s side, who have now eliminated Sundowns from cup competitions twice in less than a year—having also knocked them out of the Telkom Knockout in October 2023. Earlier in the tournament, Galaxy edged past Marumo Gallants in extra time, thanks to a decisive strike from Victor Letsoalo.

Not to be outdone, Casric Stars produced one of the shocks of the tournament by defeating Orlando Pirates in a tense penalty shootout. After holding the Buccaneers to a goalless draw over 120 minutes at Orlando Amstel Arena, the Motsepe Foundation Championship side held their nerve to win 5–4 on penalties—a testament to their defensive discipline and mental fortitude.
The stage is now set for two thrilling quarterfinal clashes this weekend. On Saturday, March 7, Casric Stars will face AmaZulu FC at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The following day, TS Galaxy will take on Jacksa Spears at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Mbombela—a fixture that promises high intensity and provincial pride.
“These fixtures present a golden opportunity for our provincial teams to continue flying the Mpumalanga flag high on the national stage,” MEC Mabuza remarked. “Their journey so far reflects the dedication of players, technical teams, management, and the loyal supporters who have stood by them.”
With both clubs now just two wins away from a place in the Nedbank Cup final, Mabuza has called on the people of Mpumalanga to throw their weight behind the teams. “We urge every resident to rally behind TS Galaxy and Casric Stars as they prepare for these crucial matches. Your support is a vital source of motivation as they aim to advance further in the competition.”
She concluded with a message of encouragement: “We wish both teams strength, focus, and success as they take to the field in pursuit of semifinal glory. Mpumalanga is behind you.”
As the Nedbank Cup reaches its business end, all eyes will be on these two spirited sides, each carrying the hopes of a province known for its passion, pride, and perseverance.
