Sekhukhune: The two day voter registration drive for the coming by elections in the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality in Sekhukhune district, Limpopo managed to attract some young potential voters.
The voting registration took place on Saturday and Sunday respectively at six voting stations of Ward37 to pave way for the by elections that will take place in November.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), 889 people turned up to the voting stations of which 210 were new registrations.
IEC provincial electoral officer Nkaro Mateta noted, “Five hundred and three (503) came to verify their status, while 176 moved into the Ward 37 from elsewhere. Even more exciting is that 151 of the new registration are younger than 21 years. We encourage voters to turn up on 5 November to choose a Candidate of their choice to strengthen our democracy.”
Ward 37 which boasts 5114 registered voters became vacant for by-election following the death of ANC councillor, Mateta added.
Candidates nomination would start after the provincial Cooperative Governance Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs MEC has proclaimed the by elections.
Meanwhile the ANC welcomed its victory in Ward 9 of the Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality, Marble Hall in a Sekhukhune district.
ANC provincial spokesperson Jimmy Machaka said “We wish the elected councillor well and urge him to prioritise the services to the people of the ward. We also salute our volunteers, regional leadership and the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).”
The ANC retained the ward with 69.08% thus making its candidate Collis Nkwane Maleswene the ward councillor, the IEC confirmed.
EFF scored 23.60%, MKP 4.28% while SAMEBA got 1.99% in the hotly contested by election. Voter turnout was 48.87%, according to the IEC.
