WINNERS OF ONE ACT PLAYS TO BE ANNOUNCED
MBOMBELA – Two new books in Siswati and isiNdebele will soon hit the shelves, courtesy of the department of Culture, Sport and Recreation.
MEC Thandi Shongwe will announce winners of the One Act Plays Writing Competition on Thursday, October 26 at Anew Hotel, Emalahleni
starting at 09:00. The MEC will announce the top four in each language category and published in two anthologies. The publisher is Pelmo Books. Entries for the One Act Play Writing Competition opened this year and attracted 52 upcoming writers to write in isiNdebele and Siswati. The literary competition is aimed at encouraging and developing writing skills of budding writers as well as keeping IsiNdebele and Siswati languages alive, and judging by the number of entries received, 20 isiNdebele and 32 Siswati, the languages are in good health.
The One Act Play Writing Competition is the third instalment to be hosted by the department in its drive to promote indigenous languages in the province. “One of the mandates of the department is to develop indigenous and promote multilingualism. This includes the development of literature in these languages,” says spokesperson, Sibongile Nkosi. The first writing competition was for short stories in 2021 and novels last year.
