Giyani — The official handover ceremony of the new Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Giyani Campus signaled a pivotal shift in Higher Education in the region.

The event, held on Friday and attended by university officials, government representatives, and community leaders, marked the start of an ambitious project to transform the former Giyani College into a modern, state-of-the-art education hub.

TUT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tinyiko Maluleke emphasized that the milestone is more than a celebration; it represents renewal. “This campus is not just a building; it’s a symbol of our commitment to shaping the future of education,” he said.

Community leaders also expressed their enthusiasm. Hosi N’wamitwa, a traditional leader, welcomed the project’s potential to reduce travel burdens for students. “It will save community members from long journeys for education,” he said.

Giyani Municipality Mayor Thandi Zitha described the campus as a “transformative force” capable of unlocking economic opportunities and helping to address infrastructure challenges such as water shortages.

Construction is already underway, with Phase 1 focusing on lecture halls, administration buildings, cafeterias, and libraries. The project is expected to be completed in time for the 2026 academic year, while Phase 2 will add on-campus residences.

Prof. Maluleke expressed pride in the progress, noting: “The establishment of this campus is a landmark achievement for our community.” He encouraged prospective students to take advantage of the upcoming application period, stressing that the development offers “a gateway to a brighter future for many.”

The ceremony underscored a collective vision: transforming Giyani into an academic powerhouse.

As the campus takes shape, it promises to foster innovation, critical thinking, and growth vital elements for both regional and national development.
