Limpopo – A Limpopo woman has become the latest victim of a festive-season stokvel robbery, highlighting growing concerns about criminals targeting households with cash. The 55-year-old resident of Nkowankowa was attacked on Saturday morning while stepping outside to fetch water, police said.
According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, two unknown men overpowered the woman as she returned inside. One of the assailants reportedly brandished a firearm, demanded money, and forced her into a bedroom. In the raid, the suspects made off with a plastic bag containing a substantial amount of stokvel savings and the victim’s cellphone. She was pushed to the floor and sustained injuries, though no shots were fired. The attackers fled on foot before police arrived.
Limpopo provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the crime and issued a warning to communities. She urged households not to keep large sums of money at home, particularly during the festive season, when stokvel payouts often make them targets for robbery.
Police said all relevant stakeholders attended the scene and confirmed that investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111, visit the nearest police station, or submit tips via the My SAPS App
