South Africa — The Volkswagen Polo Vivo remains South Africa’s most popular hatchback, selling 2,060 units in January 2026. This performance not only secured its position as the country’s top-selling passenger car but also made it the third most popular vehicle overall, after the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger bakkies.
While the Polo Vivo continues to lead, its dominance faces growing competition from the Suzuki Swift, which staged a remarkable recovery last month with 2,029 units sold — doubling its December 2025 sales.
The Toyota Vitz also performed strongly, rising from sixth to third place with 1,514 purchases, reflecting increasing consumer interest in compact, city-friendly vehicles. As a result, the Hyundai Grand i10 moved down to fourth with 1,374 units, followed closely by the Toyota Starlet in fifth place with 1,372 sales.
Beyond the top five, the VW Polo itself ranked sixth, achieving 738 sales, while the Hyundai i20 climbed from ninth to seventh place with 550 units sold. Rounding out the top 10 were the Suzuki Baleno (440), Renault Kwid (381), and Suzuki S-Presso (338).
The ten best-selling hatchbacks accounted for 10,796 units, representing 21% of South Africa’s total vehicle sales of 50,073 for the month.
It is worth noting that the Hyundai Grand i10 is offered in both hatchback and sedan variants, but Hyundai does not provide sales figures broken down by body type.
