Polokwane — Lehlohonolo “Shebeshxt” Chauke, the 30-year-old Limpopo rapper behind several viral lekompo hits, will remain in custody after the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court postponed his bail application on Friday.

Magistrate Godfrey Netshiozwi ruled that the matter be delayed to 25 November to allow authorities to “finalise profiling, complete further investigations, and consider a possible bail application.” The ruling means the musician will spend at least another week behind bars.

The hearing unfolded in a cramped, overheated courtroom that quickly reached capacity. Supporters — including industry peers and his producer Nakedi “Naqua” Mawasha — were ordered to leave when space ran out, prompting loud protests from the gallery. Outside, hundreds of fans gathered, chanting for his release as police in riot gear held the perimeter.

Limpopo police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba said investigators were treating the case as high-priority. “A dedicated team was appointed to ensure that no stone is left unturned,” he said.

Shebeshxt faces several serious charges, including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, malicious damage to property and additional counts that may place the matter under Schedule Six. This classification would make bail significantly harder to obtain, as the defence must prove “exceptional circumstances.”

His legal team is expected to make further submissions before the next appearance.

Social media reaction was immediate and polarised. The hashtag #FreeShebeshxt trended within hours, with some fans demanding his release while others insisted that accountability must take precedence. One user wrote: “You can’t just shoot someone and walk out on R5 000 bail — that’s a mockery of justice.”

The case now pivots to the 25 November hearing, where the court will decide whether the rapper will be released pending trial or remain in custody as proceedings continue.
