Sekhukhune: Limpopo premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba will lead the Heritage Day celebrations with community members showcasing a kaleidoscope of diverse cultural backgrounds of the province at Royal Kingdom Tjate 111, Mohlaletse under Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality in Sekhukhune on Wednesday.

The provincial government encouraged residents attending the celebration to wear their traditional attire and courageously participate in activities that honour the diverse cultures of all citizens.

This year the heritage celebration would go under the theme “Reimage our Heritage Institutions for a New Era.”

According to Ramathaba the theme encouraged people to leverage heritage as a foundation for building a dynamic, socially responsive, technologically innovative and economically inclusive future.

“This year we focus on museums as they are the custodians of memory and are uniquely positioned for this shift .Our heritage institutions are not relics of the past but they are living spaces that must speak to the realities of the day,” she advised.

Tjate Kingdom represents another chapter of historic wars of resistance by African people against colonialism and land dispossession waged by successive regimes of Boer and British respectively. Tjate was a fortified residence of the legendary King Sekhukhune of the Bapedi Nation who fought fierce battles against colonisers and their African mercenaries over his land in the 1860s.

Though the new democratic government had come with plans to develop Tjate into a world heritage site, the place had barely reached a stage for self-sustainability and tourism attraction.
