Gqeberha – Shock and grief have gripped South Africa’s prosecuting fraternity following the brutal killing of Regional Court Prosecutor Tracy Brown – a woman celebrated for fearlessly taking on cases of domestic abuse and gender-based violence.

Brown, described by colleagues as “a force to be reckoned with,” was gunned down in Gqeberha under circumstances still under police investigation. Her death has not only robbed the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of one of its most dedicated officers, but also reignited urgent calls for better protection of prosecutors who deal with dangerous and high-profile cases.

For years, Brown was a relentless advocate for the vulnerable – prosecuting perpetrators of abuse with precision and passion. Her courtroom victories were not just legal wins; they were lifelines for survivors, many of whom saw her as their voice when their own had been silenced.

“This is a shameful and tragic irony,” an NPA official said. “In the very month South Africa is meant to celebrate and uplift women, a family is mourning a sister, a daughter, and a mother whose life was cut short by a bathetic act of violence.”

The NPA said Brown’s legacy will endure in the lives she changed and the justice she delivered. But her death, they stressed, should be a wake-up call to strengthen security measures for those on the frontline of the fight against crime.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family,” the NPA said in a statement. “May she rest in peace.”
