Polokwane:In a moment of pride for Limpopo, Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba has celebrated the remarkable achievement of Dr. Matodzi Rathumbu, who received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Witwatersrand on July 14, 2025.

Dr. Rathumbu, who has been at the helm of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (LEDET) since 2024, has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the province’s development and growth.

“It is inspiring to see our leaders committed to furthering their knowledge and qualifications,” stated Premier Ramathuba. “Dr. Rathumbu’s PhD is not just a personal achievement; it reinforces our collective vision for inclusive growth and job creation in Limpopo. His research tackles vital issues such as trade and tariffs, which are essential as we navigate the complexities of the global economy.”

The title of Dr. Rathumbu’s thesis, ‘The Effects of Trade Barriers on Southern Africa Development Community Regional Integration,’ provides insightful analysis on how domestic policies influence trade within the region. As Limpopo strengthens its economic ties with neighboring countries—including Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia—the insights gained from Dr. Rathumbu’s research could be pivotal in enhancing regional cooperation and economic stability.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Premier Ramathuba added, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Rathumbu for successfully balancing his leadership responsibilities while pursuing such a significant academic goal.
