Democratic Alliance MP Emma Powell has announced her resignation as the party’s International Relations Spokesperson, marking the end of her two years tenure in the role.
Her departure, however, comes with a pointed warning to South Africans. Powell has raised concerns about the ANC’s growing ties with authoritarian regimes, which she believes pose a threat to the country’s democratic values.
Throughout her time in the portfolio, Powell says she faced significant personal and professional challenges while trying to hold the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and the ANC accountable.
“In defending South Africa’s constitutional values on the international stage, I have been threatened, intimidated, harassed, and illegally surveilled,” she stated.
These allegations raise serious questions about the state of South Africa’s security apparatus and the direction of its foreign policy.
Social Media users suggest that Powell’s resignation may be linked to recent media reports alleging her involvement in narratives critical of South Africa, though she has not directly addressed these claims.
Despite the circumstances, Powell expressed gratitude to those who supported her work.
“Given the complexities of our fragile Government of National Unity, I have achieved what I can for and in this moment. We must each do what is possible to tip the world’s axis towards freedom — but good leaders know when it is time to step back and allow others to carry the baton forward,” she concluded.
Powell remains a Member of Parliament and will continue to focus on empowering others especially young women.
