Germany– Pieter Coetze has secured South Africa’s first gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Germany.
The 21-year-old swimmer broke his own record to win the 100 metres backstroke title.
He clocked a time of 51.85 seconds — the fastest in the world so far this year.
Thomas Ceccon took silver, while Yohann Ndoye-Brouard claimed the bronze medal.
