A wave of violent robberies is sweeping through churches in Mpumalanga, leaving worshippers traumatized and communities on edge.
Armed gangs have turned sacred spaces into crime scenes, threatening congregants at gunpoint and making off with cash, cellphones, and other valuables.
One of the most shocking cases occurred September 5 in Kwaggafontein, where armed robbers stormed a church around 6:30 PM, threatening congregants and making off with cellphones and cash.
Similar attacks have also taken place in Ngwenyeni earlier this month, with thieves targeting worshippers during services.
In response, law enforcement agencies in Mpumalanga, including specialized units like the Anti-Hijacking Task Team and Dog Unit, have stepped up their efforts.
Recently, five suspects linked to a church robbery near Ngwenyeni were arrested after a tip-off, with police seizing firearms, cellphones, and cash, indicating an organized criminal network.
Police have urged community members to stay vigilant, especially during church services, and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
“We are working tirelessly to bring these criminals to justice and ensure the safety of our communities,” said Mpumalanga Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selby Moloto.
The MEC for Culture, Sport & Recreation, Ms. Leah Mabuza, expressed her shock and outrage over the rising trend.
“This criminality targets our spiritual sanctuaries and threatens our communal peace. We call on all churches and community members to work together in safeguarding these vital spaces,” she stated.
Similarly, the Mpumalanga Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) condemned the attacks, emphasizing the moral decay underlying these acts.
“Our communities are suffering from a decline in moral values, which manifests in such criminal acts. We must foster a culture of respect and responsibility,” said MRM Chairperson, Reverend Dr. Nathi Ndlovu.
Authorities have also advised congregants to avoid carrying large sums of money and valuables to church, and to remain cautious of unfamiliar faces.
The police’s crackdown is part of a broader initiative to restore safety and confidence in community spaces, with officials emphasizing collaboration between law enforcement, faith organizations, and residents.
Community reactions have been mixed; many residents express fear and frustration, yet others call for increased neighborhood patrols and community-led security initiatives. Social media platforms are flooded with warnings urging churches to heighten security and residents to stay alert.
