JOHANNESBURG – Santa may bring little cheer to South African motorists this festive season, with no relief at the fuel pump expected.
According to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund, petrol prices are set to rise by between 20 and 25 cents per litre, while diesel could see an even sharper increase due to a 93 cents per litre under-recovery heading into December.
Despite a stronger rand, rising global fuel costs are outweighing any potential benefits at the pump, leaving consumers to shoulder the higher costs. Oil prices have climbed steadily over the past few months due to increased global demand, supply disruptions, and ongoing geopolitical tensions, which has placed upward pressure on local fuel prices.
The timing of the increase is particularly challenging, with many households already budgeting for festive travel, family gatherings, and end-of-year expenses. Transport costs are expected to rise across the board, affecting not only private motorists but also public transport and delivery services, which could lead to higher costs for goods and services.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead and factor higher fuel costs into their holiday travel plans, including longer trips to family homes or popular tourist destinations. Experts suggest carpooling, using public transport where possible, and maintaining fuel-efficient driving habits to help mitigate the impact of rising prices.
Petrol station operators also warn that queues may be longer during peak periods, as many drivers attempt to fill up before the next increase. While the government continues to monitor the situation, analysts say that any short-term relief is unlikely, with price adjustments expected to continue through December and possibly into the new year.
For now, drivers are urged to remain vigilant, budget carefully, and be prepared for the financial strain of higher fuel costs during the festive season.
