Lebowakgomo:During the tabling of the 2024/25 Budget Vote, Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Tshitereke Matibe, highlighted the department’s commitment to promoting socio-economic transformation and inclusion. The aim is to uplift and empower marginalized groups and create opportunities for their active participation in township and rural economies.

To achieve this, the department has forged essential public-private partnerships, including a collaboration with Coca Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA). Through this partnership, forty-five entrepreneurs who are youth, women, and people with disabilities will receive support and resources to start their own businesses. These beneficiaries will be provided with fully furnished businesses within the next four months, adding to the existing 135 beneficiaries who have been supported over the past three years.

In addition to these efforts, the department is also implementing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to empower communities and attract investments. Currently, there are 37 companies in the investment pipeline for SEZs, with an estimated investment value of R56.6 billion. These companies are expected to create at least 8,000 jobs in the short term and over 20,000 jobs in the next 10 years.

As September approaches, which is Tourism Month, the department has allocated R25 million for infrastructure upgrades and refurbishments of Limpopo Wildlife Resorts. This project will not only enhance the tourism sector in the province but also provide job opportunities for the people of Limpopo.

MEC Matibe emphasizes that positive transformation in the province is long overdue, and the department is dedicated to creating a conducive environment for job opportunities and economic growth. By empowering youth, women, and people with disabilities, and fostering partnerships and initiatives, the department aims to bring about sustainable change and upliftment in township and rural economies,”this strategic vote is set deliberately towards socio-economic transformation and implementation of the empowerment and perception of these previously marginalized and vulnerable groups.” explained Matibe

This budget vote reflects the commitment of the Limpopo government towards creating inclusive economic opportunities and addressing historical marginalization. As these efforts are implemented, it is expected that the province will experience positive growth and increased participation from previously disadvantaged groups.
