Eastern Cape–  One family’s dignity has been restored a year after being identified as a disaster-stricken household in Stocks Village, Ward 7, under the Great Kei Local Municipality.

Mayor Cllr Anele Ntsangani handed over the family’s newly renovated home along with groceries as part of the municipality’s Mandela Month program.

The house had previously lacked a proper foundation and was plagued by damp conditions.

“While significant progress has been made — including foundational work, tiling, painting, and structural improvements — some final touches, such as electrification, are still underway to ensure the home meets the highest standards of safety and quality,” said the municipality.

During his address at the handover, Mayor Ntsangani emphasized the urgent need to address broader community challenges, particularly stormwater management in Stocks Village.

“These efforts aim to benefit not only this family but the entire community by mitigating flood risks,” he said.

Mandela Month remains highly commemorated in communities across South Africa.
