Sikhululiwe : Mafube Coal, a 50% joint venture between Thungela and Exxaro, has completed the construction of a 3.4-kilometre tarred road. This new road connects Ward 7 of Sikhululiwe Village to the R104 in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. The project, which required a substantial investment of R54 million, reflects Mafube Coal’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure for surrounding communities.
The road construction project arose from public consultations with the Sikhululiwe Village community, which expressed concerns about the poor road conditions affecting transport, particularly during the rainy season. These conditions had significantly hindered service delivery in the region.
Tamara Qwatekana, General Manager of Mafube Coal, emphasized the importance of reliable road infrastructure, stating, “It allows communities to access opportunities and services with dignity. This investment reflects our continued commitment to building infrastructure that makes a lasting difference in the communities where we operate.”

The new tarred road is expected to improve the quality of life for the approximately 400 households in the village. It will facilitate easier access to essential services, reduce travel time, and lessen vehicle damage caused by poor road conditions. Residents will no longer face the challenges of navigating muddy paths during heavy rains, which previously forced pedestrians to wade through water to reach their destinations.
The project not only enhances transportation but also provided 15 job opportunities for local suppliers during its implementation. Sakhisene, a local small, medium, and micro-enterprise (SMME), constructed perimeter fencing along the new road to prevent livestock from crossing.
Thulasizwe Thomo, the MEC for Public Works, Roads, and Transport in Mpumalanga, praised the collaboration between government and the private sector. He stated, “This initiative is a great example of what can be achieved when government and the private sector work together. The project has strengthened the infrastructure that supports this community, enabling them to travel without damaging their vehicles and allowing easy access to the R104 that links the village to Middelburg and Belfast.”

Iddy Mahlangu, the Councillor from Ward 7, expressed gratitude for Mafube Coal’s investment in the community, noting, “This road has transformed our village and will make traveling in and out of this area safer and easier, especially for those who need to reach schools and healthcare facilities.”
The completion of the road project has brought renewed hope for Sikhululiwe’s residents and small businesses, enabling them to grow and access new markets.
Mafube Coal’s investment extends beyond the road itself; the company has also contributed to other facilities, including a local clinic that serves the community. Qwatekana noted that the previous poor road conditions had adversely affected the daily commutes of residents, including teachers, some of whom resigned due to transport challenges.
“We are honoured to be part of projects that positively impact the community, creating lasting dignity for the people of Sikhululiwe Village,” Qwatekana concluded.
Steve Tshwete Executive Mayor Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela reiterated the importance of this road for the community. He encouraged residents to communicate any future challenges regarding road access, reinforcing the commitment to continued community engagement and support.

This road project not only represents physical infrastructure but also embodies safety, accessibility, dignity, and hope for the people of Sikhululiwe Village.
