Sekhukhune: Members of the Limpopo Legislature (MPLs) descended on to various places under the Sekhukhune District Municipality on Tuesday at the start of their three day long ‘Taking the Legislature to the people’ campaign.
The provincial parliamentarians separated into teams which managed to hold oversights at several service delivery points and projects including health facilities in some villages under all the four local municipalities, Ephraim Mogale, Elias Motsoaledi, Makhuduthamaga and Fetagomo-Tubatse.
A team led by the provincial Legislature Speaker Dr Makoma Makhurupetja and her deputy, Tebogo Mamorobela kicked off the campaign with courtesy visit to the Bapedi nation Queen Mother, Her Majesty Maayaku Thulare at her Tjate palace in Mohlaletse under the Tubatse Fetakgomo Municipality.
After a warm reception from the Queen Mother, the team then headed to the host traditional leader, Kgoshi Legare Mashegoane in Schoonord under the Makhuduthamaga local municipality where they also exchanged pleasantries.
With unemployment and water crisis bedevilling residents of the Sekhukhune district municipality, some people have expressed hope members of legislature would resolve their service delivery woes.
“For years we have been told we will get water from De Hoop Dam, which right here but we are still thirsty and dry. Some of these provincial parliamentarians are citizens of this district, I hope they will make it possible for water to flow to us this time because local government elections are around the corner,” said Sbongile Bhembe of Steelpoort.
Thato Komane of Malebitsa said, “I am afraid, I am about to turn 29 and never got formal employment since I graduated with BA administration from the university. Legislature to the people should be about employment, especially for young people.”
The current oversight visit by the provincial law makers is held under the theme, ‘Unlocking service delivery challenges through strengthening public participation and oversight mechanism.”
The campaign will culminate with the sitting of the Legislature which includes engagement with various stakeholders at Peter Nchabeleng sportsground in Schoonoord outside Jane Furse, Makhuduthamaga Municipality on Thursday.
