Sekhukhune: Members of Limpopo Legislatures (MPLs) have not only brought cattle to some traditional leaders in Sekhukhune but have also observed numerous service delivery challenges, and met with pleas for coordinated government intervention from residents.
At Groblersdal Regional Court, people told MPLs about delays of up to two years and even more for cases to be finalised. While the provincial legislators listened eagerly there was however no official from the regional court to engage with them.
In other places such as Denilton, Ga-Phaahla, Mphane and other villages, people talked about collapsing projects and infrastructure as well as overcrowding in health facilities and schools. They complained about vandalism, poor roads including escalating theft of power and communication cables.
“The schools and health facilities are ticking time bombs; they are getting crowded by day. It is worrying because some of the clients are undocumented foreign nationals.” said Shoba Maitla of Elandsdoring outside Groblersdal.
But despite vibrant concerns about soaring unemployment and lack of economic opportunities raised by residents, the atmosphere was lively at Boiketlong Lodge in Glen Cowie where MPLS met with business community, youth, people with disabilities, traditional leaders and other stakeholders.
Chief Whip Essop Mokgonyana facilitated the discussions and people decried the slow progress of service delivery and lack of water. Councillor Ali Matlala, on behalf of the Sekhukhune District Municipality expressed appreciation at the conducts of stakeholders attending the session despite differing grievances.
The Sekhukhune District municipality also thanked the Limpopo Legislature for donating a cow to Queen Mother Maanyaku Thulare’s Tjate Palace as well as giving the second beast to the host traditional leader Kgoshi Legare Mashegoana.
O Thursday, MPLs would be expected to hold a full sitting of the legislature at Peter Nchabeleng sportsground in Schoenoord to outline their own observations from the fields as well as give promises to address concerns raised by stakeholders.
The session would mark the close of the three day, ‘Taking Legislature to the people’ campaign in Sekhukhune district.
