Veeplaas, Gqeberha – With youth unemployment in South Africa alarmingly high – ranging between 45% and 60% for ages 15 to 34 – targeted and tangible interventions are more crucial than ever.
Hope rolled into Veeplaas in the form of the Kasi Delivery Youth Empowerment Programme, a bold initiative spearheaded by the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Hon. Nonkqubela Pieters, alongside Nelson Mandela Bay’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, Cllr Bassie Kamana.
The Veeplaas Community Hall buzzed with renewed energy as 20 motorbikes were officially handed over to young entrepreneurs — a move aimed at supporting township-based delivery services, boosting mobility, and stimulating local economic activity.
Ward 28 Councillor Luzuko Peter welcomed the delegation and applauded the initiative, labelling it a “lifeline” for the unemployed youth in his community. “Our young people are desperate for opportunity. This programme not only brings skills and resources closer to them, but it restores dignity and hope,” Peter said.
Delivering the vote of thanks, MMC Kamana underscored the significance of collaboration between government, agencies, and community:
“To the young people here today, your passion for creating opportunities and reducing unemployment in our country is truly inspiring. To our government partners – ECDC, the project company, and all supporting entities – thank you.
The provision of motorbikes to these young entrepreneurs is not just a gesture; it is a clear sign of what we can achieve when we work together. It is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving economic growth and development,” said Kamana.
He added that the success of the programme lies in its ability to uplift and empower youth as future leaders, innovators, and changemakers. “The future is in their hands — and it is bright,” Kamana concluded.
The programme, supported by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), Departments of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, and GCIS – Eastern Cape, forms part of government’s broader #Siyasebenza campaign — placing youth at the centre of development and transformation.
As the dust settles on a successful day in Veeplaas, one thing is certain: #KasiDelivery is more than a programme — it’s a movement.
