South Africa – Jaecoo has expanded its J5 SUV range in South Africa with the launch of a new entry-level trim, the Core. Priced from R339,900, it is R40,000 cheaper than the previous base model, the Vortex, which starts at R379,900.
“Jaecoo South Africa has expanded the J5 range with the arrival of the new Core trim, a value-focused entry point designed to broaden the brand’s appeal without compromising on capability or quality,” said the company.
With this launch, the J5 Core now competes directly with the recently updated Omoda C5, offering similar starting pricing.
Engine and Performance
The Core trim is powered by the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine shared across the J5 lineup. It delivers 115kW and 230Nm to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Drivers can choose from three modes – Eco, Normal, and Sport – with an average fuel consumption of 7.5L/100km.
Features and Comfort
Despite its entry-level positioning, the J5 Core comes well-equipped:
- Exterior: 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, electric side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers
- Interior: Six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, four-way manually adjustable front passenger seat, black cloth upholstery, multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control
- Infotainment & Connectivity: 8-inch digital driver display, 9-inch portrait infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB Type-A and Type-C charging ports
- Safety & Assistance: ABS, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist, hill descent control, dual front airbags, Isofix child seat mounts, rear parking sensors
The boot space offers 480 litres, expandable to 1,284 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded down.

All models include a 5-year/150,000 km warranty, 2-year/30,000 km service plan, 10-year/1-million km engine warranty, and 5-year/unlimited km roadside assistance plan.
