South Africa — New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) — including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric cars — gained significant momentum in South Africa over the past year, and one model has clearly stood above the rest: the Toyota Corolla Cross.
According to pre-owned sales data, hybrid vehicle sales surged by 76% in 2025, highlighting a growing appetite for fuel-efficient alternatives among local buyers.
At the centre of this shift is the Corolla Cross Hybrid, which emerged as South Africa’s best-selling used hybrid model.
Dominating the hybrid market: Of the 4,888 used hybrid vehicles sold in South Africa last year, a massive 1,901 units — nearly 40% — were Corolla Cross models.
This gives the SUV a commanding lead in the hybrid space, making it the clear benchmark for affordability, practicality, and efficiency in the segment.
The Corolla Cross’s success isn’t limited to its hybrid variants either.
Across all derivatives, the model recorded 6,001 total sales in 2025, ranking it among the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the country — with almost a third of those sales coming from hybrid models.
Among SUVs, it was second only to the larger Toyota Fortuner in overall sales volumes. Interestingly, the Fortuner was also the only SUV to sell faster on average, taking 27 days to move compared to the Corolla Cross’s 35 days.
Supply meets demand: Part of the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s dominance can also be explained by availability.
It was the most-listed hybrid vehicle on AutoTrader last year, ensuring a steady supply for buyers in the used market.
On average:
- Listed models were 2 years old with 23,168km and priced at R433,584
- Sold units had 22,649km and an average selling price of R421,286
This gap between asking and selling prices suggests strong demand, while still offering buyers some negotiating room.
Why it works for South Africans: The Corolla Cross Hybrid ticks several key boxes for local buyers, particularly those exploring NEVs for the first time.
According to motor’s insights, it addresses major concerns in the segment by offering:
- Pricing below R600,000
- A driving range exceeding 500km
- Proven reliability and low running costs
New vs used: What you get: Buyers considering a new or used Corolla Cross Hybrid have three options: XS, XR, and GR-Sport. All models are powered by a 1.8-litre hybrid petrol engine producing 90kW, paired with a CVT transmission driving the front wheels.
This setup delivers excellent efficiency at 4.3L/100km, with a range of up to 837km.
The entry-level XS (R501,100) comes well equipped with features such as:
- LED headlights
- Keyless entry
- Touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Cruise control
- Reverse camera and rear parking sensors
- Dual-zone climate control and partial leather upholstery
The XR (R552,400) adds:
- 18-inch alloy wheels
- 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
- Panoramic-view monitor
- Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
- Hands-free tailgate
At the top of the range, the GR-Sport (R569,700) introduces a sportier design and driving feel, with:
- Unique GR styling elements and badging
- Revised suspension, steering, and shock absorbers
- Black leather interior with red stitching
- Aluminium sports pedals and GR-themed finishes
While it doesn’t offer more power, the GR-Sport focuses on a more dynamic driving experience.
All Corolla Cross Hybrid models are sold with a:
8-year/195,000km hybrid battery warranty
3-year/100,000km warranty
6-service/90,000km service plan
