South Africa – South African grocery comparison app Grocify has officially launched on the Google Play Store, giving shoppers a simple way to see which store — Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, Woolworths, and now Shoprite — offers the best prices.
Founder Ethan Stander got the idea from a personal conversation with his girlfriend’s mother about the difficulty of quickly comparing grocery prices across multiple stores. “That conversation planted the seed for Grocify,” said Stander.
The app pulls product prices from retailers’ online catalogues in real time, allowing users to compare prices for single items or a full basket. Users can see which store has the lowest price overall, or choose to shop across multiple stores for maximum savings.
Simple, Intuitive Design
Grocify’s workflow is straightforward. The “Search” tab lets users quickly check prices for individual products, while the “Cart” tab calculates which retailer offers the best deal for multiple items.
The app is free, requires no account setup, and asks for only one permission — location — to show nearby stores. Early testers praised its intuitive interface and potential to help users save money.
New Features at Launch
For the public launch, Stander added several features based on early feedback:
- Shoprite-branded stores included alongside existing retailers
- Ability to manually set a location and select specific stores for comparison
- Petrol cost calculator to estimate travel expenses and factor them into total shopping costs
- Dark mode for easier viewing
- Integration with Woolworths and Checkers Vitality Rewards
- “Deals” page consolidating all reward-linked offers
Stander says the next step is launching Grocify on the Apple App Store, which he expects before the end of March.
