KwaZulu-Natal – A four-storey temple under construction at River Range Ranch collapsed on Friday, sending concrete and steel crashing down onto workers below. Emergency teams from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) and local paramedics responded within minutes, but several workers remain unaccounted for, and authorities warn that the death toll may rise.

The structure, described by neighbours as a “temple,” had been under construction for several months. Witnesses say the building was still incomplete when it suddenly gave way, trapping workers beneath a heavy layer of rubble.

“We heard a massive crack and then everything went silent,” said one eyewitness who asked not to be named. “People are still sending voice notes from under the debris – it’s heartbreaking.”

RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said additional medical teams and rescue units have been called in to assist with the extraction efforts. Police K9 units and search dogs have also been deployed to locate survivors, a method previously used in another deadly construction collapse in Inanda earlier this year.

Investigators are probing whether substandard materials, structural weaknesses, or poor workmanship contributed to the collapse. The Department of Labour has launched a formal inquiry, and the site has been handed over to the South African Police Service for a criminal investigation.

Local residents gathered near the scene, holding signs calling for accountability and stronger safety enforcement. “This is not just a tragedy – it’s a symptom of a bigger problem in our construction industry,” said community leader Thandi Mkhize. “We need accountability and real change.”

Rescue operations are expected to continue throughout the weekend as teams work to stabilise the remaining structure and reach those still trapped. The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that investigations are ongoing and warned that any individuals or companies found responsible will face prosecution.

This is a developing story.
