Eastern Cape– The long-awaited upgrade of the unreliable Zwelitsha Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) is finally moving forward, with Phase 2 nearing completion.
Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) is currently finalising the tender documents required to complete the remaining scope of work. The cost of the project is estimated at R141 million.
The plant was left incomplete in 2021, placing a significant strain on water supply to Zwelitsha, Qonce, Bhisho, and surrounding areas.
“These challenges have profound implications for service delivery, environmental health, and the socio-economic development of our communities,” the municipality stated.
Buffalo City Municipality has urged residents to remain patient during this phase, emphasizing that the project is not only expected to improve the quality of water supply but also attract investment to the municipality.
“The successful completion of the Zwelitsha WWTW will serve as a catalyst for growth, sustainability, and dignity for the people of Buffalo City,” the municipality said.
