Gauteng — Family, friends, political leaders and community members gathered in Ekurhuleni on Saturday to bid farewell to Andile Mngwevu, the City of Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Planning, whose life was cut short when his vehicle was swept away by severe flooding in Mozambique last month.
The funeral service at KwaThema Stadium was marked by solemn reflections on Mngwevu’s life and service, and deeply emotional tributes from his children, who spoke openly about their grief and loss.
A montage of photographs showing Mngwevu with his family played as his children took turns remembering their father. One of his daughters, fighting back tears, spoke of the milestones he would no longer witness. “I wish we had more time — to laugh, to go out for ice cream, for you to see my matric dance, my 18th birthday and my matric results,” she said. “But God had other plans, and I’m not angry.”
“I wouldn’t choose anyone else to be my dad, even in the next lifetime,” she added, thanking him for being her greatest supporter at school events, athletics meetings and poetry competitions. “Most of all, I’ll miss your love. May your soul rest in peace. I love you, always and forever.”
Mngwevu’s sons also spoke from the heart. One son recalled how his father ensured he never lacked what he needed, whether for school, soccer gear or even everyday wishes. “You were the best father… There is no one better than you. I’m going to miss you a lot,” he said.
Another son described the pain of losing his father and the future they had planned together. He vowed to honour his legacy, saying, “Your name is big in the community and in the family. I promise I will not bring it down. Wherever you are, you will always have a son who will make you proud.”
The youngest daughter delivered perhaps the most heart-rending tribute: “Daddy, can you come back home? I already miss you. I love you, Daddy.”
Mngwevu’s passing occurred after heavy flooding in the Chókwè area of Mozambique swept away the vehicle he was travelling in during an official trip; three other people with him also died. Details of the recovery of his body, including the exact location, have not been disclosed.
A number of senior officials attended the funeral to pay their respects. Among them were ANC Secretary‑General Fikile Mbalula, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo‑Ralehoko, and the president of the ANC Youth League, Collen Malatji, along with multiple municipal and party leaders.
Their presence underscored the high regard in which Mngwevu was held as a public servant and community leader. Officials and mourners described his commitment to service and his dedication to his family and community throughout the service.
