Jane Furse: On Monday Ernest Rachoene, the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, officially handed over the contract to commence the upgrading of road D4230, specifically the Leolo Access Road, in Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality. The event was attended by the Acting Executive Mayor of the Sekhukhune District, the Local Mayor, traditional authorities, council representatives, and officials from the Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, along with Roads Agency Limpopo.

The MEC expressed his satisfaction and relief at reaching this crucial stage of the project, marking the start of essential improvements in the area. Community leaders and residents welcomed the news with enthusiasm, recognizing the transformative impact the road upgrade would have on local connectivity and economic development.

The project will be rolled out in phases, beginning with the first phase covering a 5-kilometer stretch of road. A consulting engineer has been appointed to supervise the design and environmental assessments, ensuring adherence to quality and compliance standards throughout the project.

MEC emphasized the need for a respectful and cooperative relationship between the contractor and the community. “Collaboration and support are paramount to ensuring the project is completed efficiently and without disruption,” he stated. To further empower the local community, the project plans to allocate 30% of work to local SMMEs and reserve 10% for local labor, directly contributing to job creation and economic growth.

This handover signifies the commencement of the first of 21 road upgrades announced during the 2025/2026 Budget Vote, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing rural infrastructure and uplifting livelihoods in Makhuduthamaga.
