South Africa — Holidaymakers planning to fly this Easter are being warned to brace for higher ticket prices, as demand surges across South Africa’s busiest domestic routes.

With the long weekend driving a spike in travel between major cities, airfares have climbed well above their usual levels, particularly for departures on Friday and return flights on Monday.

A comparison across local airlines — including FlySafair, South African Airways, LIFT, CemAir and Airlink — shows that one-way tickets are now ranging from under R1,000 to nearly R4,000, depending on the route and travel time.

The sharp increase reflects a familiar pattern during peak travel periods, where limited seat availability and high demand push prices upward.

Flights between Cape Town and Durban are among the most expensive this weekend, with fares stretching from roughly R1,200 on budget carriers to as high as R3,800 on full-service airlines.

The Cape Town–Johannesburg route, however, remains relatively competitive due to the high number of daily flights. Prices on this corridor are currently sitting between R1,200 and R2,800.

Travellers flying between Durban and Johannesburg can still find lower fares, with budget options starting around R900, although premium tickets on the same route are reaching up to R3,000.

On less serviced routes, pricing pressure is even more noticeable. Flights between Gqeberha and Cape Town are limited, resulting in higher fares ranging from about R1,000 to R2,500. Reduced airline availability on this route continues to drive costs upward.

Timing is also playing a major role in pricing. Early morning and late-night flights tend to be more affordable, while mid-morning departures are attracting the highest fares.

Passengers are also being reminded to factor in additional costs such as checked baggage, which can add between R300 and R800 to the overall price.

With fares expected to fluctuate throughout the weekend, travellers are being encouraged to book as early as possible and remain flexible with their travel times to avoid paying peak prices.
